Music Minister

Steve Sims

Greetings! I am honored to be the Music Minister at Rock Creek Baptist Church. I am also excited to be back in Shawnee where I attended Oklahoma Baptist University.

I have been a pastor's kid my entire life and did most of my growing up in Blanchard, OK. I graduated from Blanchard High School in 1996 and while I dreamed of becoming an architect or city planner, I knew I needed to utilize the gifts the Lord gave me and decided to pursue music studies at OBU. I earned my music education degree from OBU in 2000 and my church music degree from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY in 2005. Ten years later I received my doctorate in music from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX.

My wife, Carrie (also a pastor's kid), and I met in Canyon, TX in October 2007 at a West Texas A&M football game and we were married on June 6, 2008. The Lord has tremendously blessed us with four beautiful children -- Easton, Molly, Cayson, and Addilyn.

The Lord has allowed me to serve in various capacities in churches in Oklahoma, Kentucky, New Mexico and Texas. I enjoy singing, playing the piano, reading, collecting old hymnals, commercial aviation, and spending time with my family.

For many years I believed that I became a Christian at youth camp when I was a young teenager. I had gone through the motions and did what was expected of me. It wasn't until I was in seminary (and preparing my testimony before being ordained as a deacon in my church) that the Lord had shown me that I wasn't converted until my sophomore/junior year in college. It was during that period in college when I had a true conviction and hatred of my sin, knowledge of my need for Christ, hunger for biblical teaching, and a thirst for the things of God.

The Lord continues to reveal His truths to me and sanctify my life. He uses my family in a mighty way to show me my own selfishness. I thoroughly enjoy getting to both serve in the local church and teach in the academic setting. As J.S. Bach would say, Soli Deo Gloria!
